Campaign day makes MINT-topics understandable for children

6th day of inventors and explorers

At the “6th Inventors and Explorers’ Day Baden-Württemberg” on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, 53 companies and institutions in 23 cities opened their doors to a total of almost 1.400 children from daycare centers and elementary schools. They sensitized them to their topics by encouraging the children to participate invited. The switch manufacturer Kraus & Naimer and “Verkehrsbetriebe” Karlsruhe show how this can be done.

Kraus & Naimer manufactures switches

At Kraus & Naimer, a company that manufactures main disconnectors and main switches for use on machines in Karlsruhe with around 250 employees, there arrives a group of first graders from the Drais Community School in the mornings. Stefanie Polzer from the marketing department at Kraus & Naimer equips the children with blue safety vests and caps with the company logo and guides them through the company.

Mounting an assembly yourself

They can try out a lot yourself: The "youngsters" assemble a module, for example, by inserting a "bridge girder" into a housing, providing so-called box terminals with a contact and also inserting them. Ivy scolds: "It keeps coming apart," she says, rubbing her sweaty hands dryly. Finally, she did it and got a stamp on the colorful card that she had on her neck.

“Pass on positive experiences with technology”

Stefanie Polzer thinks it is important that children come into contact with technical topics early on and experience their fascination. "We are particularly happy when we can address girls with it," she says. Andreas Sturm, the children's teacher, is enthusiastic: “Switches are a rather abstract topic,” he says. “But Kraus & Naimer came up with a lot to bring it closer to the children. You will certainly see switches with different eyes in the future.” He was impressed too by what was hidden behind an alleged little component.

Quote of parents to Kraus & Naimer: “Today our daughter was allowed to spend the day of inventors and explorers with you with a group from the Drais School. Thank you very much for thinking so much and for making such great gifts! Our daughter and we are impressed. "
